In the winter of 1997 a group of artists mounted an exhibition in a public hall at the Regional Government Headquarters in Ottawa. The show was called "Rebel Icons". It featured a few pieces that were deemed "scandalous" and the show was shut down amidst great turmoil. One of the "alarming" works, a photograph by Marion Bordier, was of a woman's rear end. The subject had apparently given birth recently and she had a gi-normous hemorhoid (the size of a grapefruit) hanging out of her. I thought the scandal that had erupted over the controversy had been quite ridiculous. In support of the "Rebel Icons" I created a hemorhoid costume for an interactive, itinerant performance piece at The Edge - a huge, artsy and boozy one-night fundraiser that occupied the entire Arts Court in Ottawa on June 7th, 1997. The outfit was essentially a body bent over with it's pants pulled down to expose a pink stretch knit rump. My head was sticking out of the "hole", and I was sporting a lumpy, fucia satin head piece to represent the 'rhoids. I had these little certificates printed up (see below) which I gave to people with whom I interacted that evening. They also doubled as flyers for Creative Outlet, a store and gallery which I operated with Laura Margita at that time. Towards the end of the evening a drunken kook bit a hole out of one of the "cheeks" of my hemorhoid outfit. I have since disposed of this costume.

by the following means:

(check one... or check 'em all if you're REALLY HAPPENING!)

  • goosing and/or spanking (pretty lame, butt that's the Ottawa crowd for ya...)
  • anilingus (when a simple peck on the cheek isn't quite enough!)
  • sligo (per Douglas Adams' "The Meaning of Liff", an unnamed and exotic sexual act which people like to believe that famous film stars get up to in private. "To Commit Sligo")
  • beer enema (state of the art fuel injection)
