| Ottawa surprises with sex and
colour (excerpt) |
| Further signs of fornication, brilliance and
art can be encountered at The Sexposition, a group sex show at Creative Outlet
gallery. After being welcomed by Reuel Dechene's zebra-skinned Electric Sex
sign, you will be confronted by art which ranges from the sublime to the
pathetically amateur. As she wishes to accentuate the positive, the Art Fag
will only mention the former. Painter Eliza Griffiths definitely rules the exhibition. Her work entitled Dynamite! is technically accomplished, beautiful and blatant. She has also produced a series of lino-block prints which are fun (and affordable). Readers may remember her large-scale paintings of strippers presented at gallery 101 in January of this year. Photographer Louis Joncas continues to enchant and challenge his viewers. In Untitled Nos 1, 2 and 3, Joncas pairs large black & white close-ups of cocks with paths from gay cruising grounds. Are these cocks the ones he actually discovered on those paths? Is it an accurate pairing of penis and place? Is this erotic cartography or wishful thinking? Joncas also has a series of Polaroid transfers for sale. They are extremely beautiful shots of various pornographic couplings. On the lighter side, there is Robin Ramah's series Food Nos. 1, 2 & 3. The black and white photographs feature various vegetables protruding from the shapely naked behind of a faceless male. The two featuring string beans are especially bewitching. These explosions of lust, talent, tone, tongues, tits, dicks, and clits are invigorating and environmentally friendly. If the monotony of official Ottawa is getting you down, go and see Sexhibition, make a video or fuck like a crazed weasel. It will do you, and all of us, a lot of good.
