| Ottawa artist Darcy Schmidt has enjoyed a
lifelong fascination with fish, ever since his early childhood, when he would
stare for hours at the goldfish darting about in his Asian neighbours'
miniature pond in his hometown of Port Alberni, British Columbia. Schmidt is
now reeling in the profits from what some would call his "fish
obsession". Schmidt is a 1993 graduate of the University of Ottawa's Fine Arts (studio) program. From 1996 to 1997, he managed Creative Outlet, an exhibition and retail space for emerging artists in the national capital region. In 1997, Schmidt helped launch the Black tie 2 Bondage fashion show fundraiser for the SAW Gallery, which has become a much-anticipated annual event. he continued to develop as a performance artist and consume designer, with an accent on "the rude and unusual". Schmidt kept on producing fish paintings ("trying to catch the effect of refracted light on water and the disintegration of form') and sex-based art, and decided to mesh the two. He put together a show of "Sexy Fish" - "lots of cartoon fishes getting it on in every way imaginable. His cartoon fish designs are now being merchandised on greeting cards and T-shirts by a Toronto novelty company. People across Canada are really hooked on Schmidt's fish paintings. These days, Schmidt divides his time between Ottawa and Vancouver. He is that rarity in Canada - a full-time working artist. After a hiatus, Schmidt has resumed his "serious fish painting". "This time, I came closer to catching that shimmer of light and flicker across the water than ever before." he mounted his cleverly-titled Fishtychs ((fish paintings in panels) exhibition at Artguise in April 2001. |
