SAW Gallery raises eyebrows and awareness
SAW Gallery has the art of fundraising all sewn up.

Black Tie 2 Bondage 2, the artist-run gallery's annual fashion fundraiser, is set to raise a few eyebrows, awareness, and , ideally, lots of money.

This Saturday, Barrymore's will be transformed into a runway for the weird and wonderful, the funky and the far out.

The eclectic costumes captured by our camera are but a small taste of the visual feast being prepared by about 35 artists and designers, in addition to participating local businesses.

And speaking of camera's co-organizer Darcy Schmidt's human sized camera, the Pornaroid S.E.X. 69, predecessor to the Polaroid SX 70, will, quite literally, be on view.

By looking through "the camera" at crotch level, the participants can view their fantasies: "The theme is (about) exposing your fantasies," explains Schmidt. We won't tell you what follows; you'll have to go and find out!

Artist Donna Wawzonek has found a new use for Astroturf in her Moan Grass dress. Cristine Murphy and James Elrick will cause a meltdown with their heavy metal hardware dress, complete with a lamp shade lit from the inside. "It's suitable for wearing to jousting events in the magnetic polar circle , or to church, if gloves are added," Schmidt laughs.

More conservative, but equally fun, will be designer Greta Burry's collection of evening wear. And Ragtime Vintage Clothing will also show off some of their wares. Karen Friis will feature her unique fabric over wire club and evening clothing.

Skins will become canvasses for body painting by the lovely Lakshmi Mendhi ladies Andrée Pouliot and Tish Parker.

And the list goes on - that's merely a smattering of what's on tap for the night.

MC's Guy Dubé and Johnny Vegas will take mics in hand for the proceedings and greeters, will be on hand to answer any questions. If any of the designs catch your eye, speak to the volunteers.

Last year's Black tie 2 Bondage raised about $6,000; although, a lot was spent on the event itself, according to organizer Laura Margita. This year, all proceeds from the door will go to the gallery.

"One of the things that's so successful about this show is that it draws participants and audiences from outside the usual artist-run centre group of people, Margita enthuses.

That core group, she stresses, is "really strong, really loyal and extremely supportive. But we have to keep trying all the time to step beyond our community. It's nice to have that community, but it's also very good if we can howl and people from other areas will hear us and know we're there"

Only then, Margita concludes, can we "expand the boundaries of the non-commercial visual arts scene in Ottawa."
