| One thing's for sure, you won't find these
garments at the Gap. Magnificent designs of leather, chains, and vibrant fabrics dominated the stage at SAW Gallery's second annual Black Tie 2 Bondage fundraiser fashion show at Barrymore's on Saturday night. As the title of the event suggests, Black Tie 2 Bondage included everything from formal wear to edgy alternative fashions like rave gear, heavy metal outfits, comic hero fashion and bondage wear. Hosts Johnny Vegas and the Dr. Frank N. Furter-esque Guy Dubé introduced more than 100 looks by up-and-coming independent designers, including Greta Burry of Amazon Voluptuous and club-wear designer Karen Friis. Small businesses such as Allegro and Ragtime, along with Neighbourhood Services, showcased exclusive clothing lines and recycled / retro fashions. Designer Marcio Melo showed latex painted jackets, coats and shoes reminiscent of his Brazilian heritage. During breaks in the show, the audience was treated to performances by singers, dancers and drag queens impersonating Reba McIntyre and Cher. Some of the more memorable designs included co-organizer Darcy Schmidt's Pornaroid S E X 69 outfit - a human sized camera that, if you look into at crotch level, will reveal your fantasies, his gender bending merman outfit, not to mention his pink naked man costume sporting a (removable) leopard print jockstrap. After the third act, the audience joined the show's participants on the dance floor to keep the night's energy alive. This year's show raised about $3,500 for SAW Gallery, a not-for-profit artist-run centre. |
