Bondage on the catwalk
Art's court was teeming with activity when I arrived Saturday afternoon to talk to Sue Ellen Gerritson, the artistic director of SAW Gallery, about the upcoming fashion show, Black Tie 2 Bondage.

Gerritson was upstairs helping with "Small Packages: holiday gift and craft sale" at the Art Rental and Sales Service when I arrived to speak to her. The place was packed full of interested buyers getting a jump start on the Christmas buying frenzy and helping out the Otttawa Art Gallery and local artists, all at the same time.

(Laura Margita has been the driving force behind the organization of this event, but she was at home drowning in hor d'oeuvres on Saturday, so I cornered Gerritsen and asked her to fill me in on the details.)

When we went downstairs, things were just as busy. Arthur II was there as part of his current residency at the gallery, The Future, along with some of his friends. The models were just arriving to try on fashions, in order to give us a sneak peak at what we can look forward to this Friday. This is the type of community involvement and active, spontaneous gallery programming that will benefit from this fund-raising fashion show.

An alternative to the other fundraisers that will be taking place for local galleries, this fashion art show benefits the designers, the gallery and the artists alike. Not often are artists given the opportunity to work in this medium and independent designers are given a rare opportunity to showcase their wares. As well, it allows for a wider range of participants besides visual artists. Allegro, Dilemme, Justines, Ragtime and Silkwear are just a few of the local businesses contributing outfits and entertainment to the evening.

More than half of the designs will be up for sale through a silent auction, with money going to both the contributor and the gallery - so bring your cheque book if you are looking for something to make a splash in, this New Year's Eve. Some of the bondage gear will have to be specially fitted and ordered, so don't be disappointed if you can't be latex gift wrapped on your way out the door.

For 25 dollars, you are guaranteed to get the most bang for your buck this holiday season at Black Tie 2 Bondage. In addition to the main attraction (the fashion), there will be a variety of performances, including the auctioneer stylings of Dr. Darcy and Chastity L'Amour and a show of trial bike riders (BMX-type stuff) presented by Poison Spider. And of course, don't forget the bondage - lots of bondage. There will also be complimentary, and not-so-complimentary, drinks available and culinary goodies from some of the best restaurants in town.

Once everyone was in gear for the photographs last Saturday, I fully realized the extreme range of designs that will be presented on Friday. Bondage, BMXs and Barbie-type fashions - what more could you possibly ask for? Independent designers Sabine Theissen and Karen Friis donned two very sleek and chic gowns which, I am certain, merely hinted at the creative and diverse fashions we will see on the night.

The only thing you won't get at the event this Friday is Barbie on the cat-walk. The artistic community has come out in full force to show off these designs, so watch for Sylvie Fortin, curator at the Ottawa Art gallery, Kevin Gibbs, the managing director of Gallery 101, and artists Dennis Tourbin, Eliza Griffiths, Reuel Dechenes and Tim Dallett, all strutting their stuff on the cat-walk.
