| Observer "Naked" artist in action (excerpt) |
| Fresh from Ottawa is Naked Artist (pictured), here to reveal the art of exhibitionism in a Friday (April 12th) performance piece called, simply enough, Naked. Before everyone gets all excited about some guy going full-monty at the intersection of Robson and Burrard, we note that Naked Artist (aka Port Alberni-born Darcy Schmidt, recent Vancouverite) is costumed in his pursuit for respect of all self-employed artists "in these times of austerity." So at 11 a.m. Friday he's gonna squeegee car windows for $100 a wipe. He doesn't plan on making a zebra-print jockstrap full of cash, just a point. "People in Canada expect culture to just happen, for institutions to provide it for them. They don't realize that culture takes a lot of energy and work from a lot of people. The most creative people in society live on the least amount of money." Naked Artist plans on revealing his foam-rubber form (not to mention a three-foot dryer hose of a unit) at various events in coming weeks, including the Sun Run. "It's comic, but it's about undressing some issues." |
