| Formal wear for
urban primitives Black Tie 2 Bondage raises funds for SAW |
| This year's Black Tie 2 Bondage promises to
be the sexiest night on Earth. So say the organizers of the third annual SAW Gallery fundraiser. "There's gonna be a little less outfit and a lot more skin," reckons fashion co-ordinator Darcy Schmidt. Skins will act as canvasses for three artists using different body painting media. David Cation will turn models into dayglo and neon skeletons, in keeping with his noted skull paintings. Austin Toms will be turning his models into the cat's meow through airbrush techniques. And Andrée Pouliot will also be in on the action. Co-ordinator Geoff Derry will make some noise with "formal wear for urban primitives," replete with velour capes and "noisy loincloths" made of bone rattles, mussel shells and other aural materials. A lot of turkey and chicken was injested in the making of the bone rattles, Derry laughs. Designer Karen Friis will send her ultra-sexy "strap-on" dresses down the runway, while Montreal artist Ana Rewakowicz's translucent, textured latex outfiits in vibrant colours will draw raves. Ragtime Vintage Clothing turns back the clock with some pieces. Some may recall Schmidt's anatomically correct naked person outfit from last year. He'll outdo that this time around with his "outrewear" for bad boys - "as in out there," he quips. "They are probably the most "excited" outfits you'll see that night," he says of anatomically correct sporrans and vests. Schmidt himself will be sporting a rather outrageous ensemble that wil for now remain a surprise. Last year's event at Barrymore's Music Hall raised about $1,500 for the artist-run gallery. Derry says he hopes to double that on Saturday. Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to grab one while you can, either at Arts Court's front desk, at the SAW Gallery, or at the door. While the arts community in Ottawa is inter-supportive, says Derry, public awareness needs to be increased, which is where the fundraiser comes in. However, he says, Capital City is changing dramatically. "This is one of the few nights of the year where there is something happening that is so unlike Ottawa," Schmidt opines. And, as Derry comments, it's an opportunity for people to dress "to the teeth... to really show off." Musical entertainment will be provided by Meg Lunney and DJ Michael Caffrey while MC Andrea Jensen, a stand-up comedian, will provide biting and witty commentary for the volunteer-driven event. There are plenty of additional performances on tap for the evening such as ambient juggling by Dugin McKinley and video mixes by John Lauder and Jake Hannah, as well as some tempting door prizes. So go, for art's sake. Because, as Schmidt enthuses, "It's going to be really fuckin' wild!"
