it Yule Love It! Where: Creative Outlet, 332 Cumberland Street When: Nov. 29-Dec. 24 Hours of Operation: Monday to Thursday, Saturday Noon-6 p.m., Friday Noon-8p.m., Sunday Noon-5 p.m. For more information, contact Laura Margita or Darcy Schmidt at 789-9223 by Kim Vignuzzi Joy! It's the sentiment of the season and it retails for as little as $150. Laura Margita and Darcy Schmidt, co-owners of Creative Outlet, have chosen joy as the theme for their "Yule Love It!" exhibition currently showing at their storefront gallery. While joy certainly has holiday associations, the work on display isn't necessarily seasonal. Much of the art is interpretive, expressing the creators' own vision of joy. Schmidt and Margita solicited work from various local and out-of-town artists, specifically asking for prints and decorative boxes that exuded joy. Schmidt and Margita devised an innovative way to market the prints to their gallery patrons. They are being sold as boxed sets of 15. Each "Joy Box" contains one of each limited edition print, numbered and signed by the artist. The box sells for $150. Not only is this an inexpensive and original purchase, but because each print is different, buying a joy box will instantly provide you with 14 gifts of art - you must keep one print for yourself. The prints are also on display in the gallery so you can see which prints the boxes contain. For the nature-lover in your family, for example, there is a print proclaiming the joy of seeds; and for any dancers in your life, there is the boldly colored print celebrating dance. The artists' boxes range from decorative, ceramic treasure-keepers to a large, brilliantly painted structure with copper-wire trim and a door that opens to reveal a rabbit figurine. The cost of this monument to creativity is $1,500, but for those on a budget, it is well worth a trip to the gallery just to admire the bold artistry. For those career scribblers, or writers, there is a selection of books and journals, each created as a canvas for expression and as an expression of the artist's craft. There was no particular theme governing the design of the books, so they are ideal for any recipient, even those whose creative talents are limited to crayons and kindergarten glue. So, if you're having trouble catching the holiday spirit or if you're searching for that elusive gift that says it all, then browse through Creative Outlet. From pre-packaged joy to presents for the particular, the Cumberland Street store can satisfy your festive cravings. Misers beware! You will love it. |
