Camp Gallery 1313 further blurs the line between fashion and art. We were initially apprehensive about spending a Friday night in Parkdale's old police station. But Fantasy Fashion Show #4, the fourth annual fundraiser for Gallery 1313, headquarters of the Parkdale Village Arts Collective, was time well spent. Arts supporters, fellow artists and curious locals turned out for the Glen Baxter-emceed event which had a bit of everything: live snakes, nudity, fire, feathers, sequins, a muscle suit, a loudspeaker with a nasty rattle and Labatt 50 (the kind with extra fun enhancers). Highlights included very creative outfits made almost entirely of old pantyhose by Elizabeth Pinter (and entitled "Panty Hoe's"); a mini-dress made by Iner Souster from bits of green circuit board; a net dress spattered with candle wax in just the right places; and naked models body-painted beyond recognition by Menno Krant. They were a huge hit at the after-party at the Cadillac Lounge down the street. Our favourites, though, were the spooky, red and black insect biker chicks (above) created by metal artists Tempermettle. The evening was artfully anchored by sexy eveningwear (including the coolest black sequined skirt) from artist Robert Lieu. Gallery 1313, which opened in 1998, is an integral part of the burgeoning art scene in the city's west end. On top of regular exhibits, the gallery hosts film screenings, dance performances, poetry readings and the like, all under the curatorship of Phil Anderson. More performance art than fashion show, the fundraiser/spectacle opened more than few eyes. Of course, these fashions were not exactly ready-to-wear, but that's exactly the point.
