Gallery 101 Howls its Last Howls Art-o-Rama Saturday July 19 Gallery 101, 319 Lisgar St. 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., $4 adv., $5 door Tickets available at Birdman Sound, Organized Sound and the Black Tomato "The last howl at the old location," is how co-organizer Carol Breton describes the art, music and performance extravaganza that will take place at Gallery 101 this Saturday. Gallery 101 is closing its doors at the Lisgar location and preparing for its move to a larger and more accessible space on Nepean Street. And they are inviting everyone out for the big party: Art-o-Rama. Gallery 101 has been active as the first artist co-operative in Ottawa since 1980 and at its Lisgar Street location for eight years. This event will be a great way to send 101 off to bigger and better things and the proceeds raised will go to the artists and towards the upcoming move. As an alternative art space, 101 has consistently presented a program incorporating not only the visual arts but also music, video and performance art. These aspects of 101's history will be highlighted in this party celebrating successes at the old location and, hopefully, helping to fund future programming. If you missed the recent art party at Arts Court, The Edge - either through poor planning or lack of funds - this is your chance to make up for it. This party is much cheaper and a bit smaller but bound to be as chaotic and fun. And you will have a chance to take home the art you like. Both these events are about people coming out to support the continued presence of the arts in our community. But, where The Edge was a four story fun house of art wackiness and hoopla, Art-o-Rama will be a more concentrated experience of active art, with opportunities to participate in performances, meet the artists and eat some good barbecue. In the tradition of 101's annual Christmas Art Auction, 24 artists will be submitting work for a silent auction that will take place at the end of the evening; but, the twist is that the works will be created during the event. Artists will be working in one of three shifts and each will be given an hour to produce their work - which will include painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking and welding. The nature of many of these art practices is labour intensive; so, several artists, including printmaker Vera Greenwood, will be appearing at the event with their preliminary stages of their work already completed. The spontaneity of this event leaves many of the artists unable to describe what they are going to produce, but this event is really all about coming out and seeing for yourself. Voyeuristically and vicariously, you will be able to enjoy the labours of local artists and maybe even become part of that elite and envied group - art owners. Because both artists and performers will be working in shifts, being fashionably late will be a definite faux pas as you are bound to miss out on some of the fun. One of the criticisms of The Edge was that it was such a labyrinth of activity that many visitors missed much of what the event had to offer: Don't worry, there's no way you will get lost at 101. Adrian Gollner, who was recently featured as one of Canada's up and coming artists in Saturday Night, will be continuing work in his Dice Drawings series. Gollner will have the audience participate in the creation of his work at Art-o-Rama - a unique opportunity to be involved with the production of these conceptually based, abstract pieces. Not to be missed at this event are graffiti artists Spill, from Montreal, and Emmanuel Madan and Thomas McIntosh, who will be presenting an encore performance of "Paper Jam," their dot matrix printer symphony. The UFO Research Group, known from performances at the past two Edge events, will be making an appearance and documenting their findings - probing optional. Under the artistic direction of Timothy Dallett, Gallery 101 has developed a reputable music program, including performances by The Phil Minton Quartet, IDA and Death Squad, which will continue on Saturday, with performances by Beautifuzz, R-Man and Kepler with DJ accompaniment by Mark Jones. Several of the music groups will be extending their performance beyond aural pleasures through the addition of complimentary visuals. Beautifuzz will be abetted by the live video projections of Visual Field Group; Tea and Cookies (of CHUO fame) will be presenting their own unique audio-visual stylings. As with the rest of the art produced, a compilation tape of the participating bands will be available to purchase. Oh yeah, remember that guy who was dressed up as hemorrhoids at The Edge? Well, he will be one of the MC's, so don't say you weren't warned. |
