Most of my first costumes were created for use in performance art pieces. I didn't use a sewing machine until January of 1999, so everything done prior to that was stitched by hand. Donna Brown sewed the zipper into my Penis outfit, and Jenna Oldham sewed the scales together for the back of my Merman outfit. Otherwise it was just me with a needle & thread and sore fingers. It isn't easy hand sewing through 1" foam rubber. In January 1999, Andy Tait, who was in charge of the wardrobe for the YB Normal mini-series for the Comedy Network, commissioned me to make them 4 penis outfits and a vagina outfit. They needed them fast and they were on a strict budget. It took me forever to sew this kind of thing by hand, and I didn't want to put in really long hours for the budget they had. So I borrowed Laura Margita's sewing machine and she gave me a 10 minute lesson on how to use it. I never really looked back. But I still hand sew certain finishing touches sometimes - it's really difficult to create a nice supple nipple using a machine! A few of my earlier outfits have been dismantled, such as Lick Me (the ice-cream cone), the Blue Sports Camel, the Pornaroid S.E.X. 69 Camera and the Hemorhoid. Sometimes things just take up too much space when you are moving across the country.
